San Sebastian (Donostia) is, for each of its 189.000 inhabitants, the most beautiful city in the world. For the rest of us, it certainly is one of the most beautiful Spanish cities, between Barcelona and Sevilla. This small, fishing village at the Bay of Biscay was founded in 1180, but became the most popular and fashionable summer destination for Europe’s aristocracy at the end of the 19th C., when the Spanish Queen Maria Cristina of Hasburg chose San Sebastian in 1887 and for the next forty years as her exclusive summer destination.
Because of its Belle Epoque atmosphere, its French-Basque architecture, the SSIFF Film Festival since 1953, the Summer Jazz Festival but above all, La Concha beach, the city has tourism all year around.
In my tour “As a local for one day in San Sebastian” we will visit all the popular spots of the city, such as:
- The Cathedral of Buen Pastor (1897)
- The Boulevard (19th C.)
- The Hotel Maria Cristina and the Theatre Vitoria Eugenia (1912)
- The Miramar Palace (1895) of Maria Cristina with the fantastic view to La Concha
- The three emblematic bridge, Maria Cristina, Santa Catalina and the Zurriola
- The Concha Beach
- The Gros Beach with Kursaal (1999)
- The Monde Igueldo with Funicular (1912) and the Parque de Atracciones.
- El Peine de Viento sculpture (optional)
- The Monde Urgull, in which we’ll enjoy a panoramic walk next to the ocean and we’ll climb all the way up to the hill.
- The Aquarium (optional)
- The City Hall and the Old City
We will end the tour inside the Old City, very popular for its numerous pintxos bars (tapas in the Basque language) and there, we will visit the oldest, least touristic and more authentic places to taste the famous Basque gastronomy. We will visit six local taverns and we’ll finish the tasting with the Basque cheese cake in the most popular tavern of the Old City.
The pintxos tasting is optional and does not included on the tour price, but it sure is a “must” when visiting San Sebastian.
